This was an interesting contest for us. It was our first 1st place finish, our first last place finish for a category, and our first top ten finish. Our brisket was perfect. Moist, tender, and tasty. Our pork was randomly piled in the box. One of the judges thought a piece that was sticking up meant that we "marked" the box somehow. Although the KBCS rep determined the piece was random, our scores for the box were quite low. KCBS judging procedures have since been changed so that all the judges mark their scores prior to anyone raising any potential disqualification issues. Would that have made a difference? Hard to say, the pork wasn't all that good anyway.
The next contest the pork moved up close to the drop, and the brisket dropped to the back of the pack.
